The Nigerian Communications Commission’s approval of a 50% pricing reduction has been praised by telecom service provider 9mobile.
In a statement released Friday in Lagos, 9mobile CEO Obafemi Banigbe praised the NCC and stated that the pricing adjustment was intended to solve issues facing the telecom industry.
Banigbe claims that the rate change will allow operators to reinvest in capacity expansion and important infrastructure improvements that have been put off because of budgetary limitations.
According to him, it would also enable operators to fulfill their responsibilities and make the capital investments required for future expansion.
“Without this adjustment, the industry risked a decline in service quality due to insufficient funding,” Banigbe said
According to him, the raise would give 9mobile’s ongoing business transformation—which includes updating network infrastructure, increasing coverage, and enhancing digital platforms—a much-needed boost.
“This decision enables us to replace outdated equipment, expand our network to underserved areas, and enhance the overall customer experience,” he said.
Banigbe said that the tariff adjustment was a strategic measure to bridge the funding gap exacerbated by rising operational expenses, many of which were denominated in foreign currency.
He said that the company remained committed to investing in infrastructure that would deliver reliable and innovative services to its customers.
“Our focus remains on empowering Nigerians through connectivity, expanding access, and supporting the nation’s vision of becoming a leading digital economy in Africa,” he said.
He said that the telecoms industry had previously advocated for a substantial tariff review to combat surging operational costs, driven by inflation, skyrocketing energy prices, and a currency devaluation exceeding 300 percent.
In its initial request, the sector demanded a more substantial increase of up to 100 percent.
“However, the NCC’s approval of a 50% adjustment represents a balanced approach to addressing industry sustainability concerns while protecting affordability for consumers,” he stated.
He said that 9mobile was poised to further strengthen its reputation as a customer-centric, quality-focused service provider, ensuring that Nigerians remain connected and empowered in an increasingly digital world.
