Accountability missing in governance debate, EFCC challenges NASS

The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has warned that accountability in governance must not be sidelined in legislative performance debates.

Speaking at the Policy Dialogue and Public Unveiling of the 10th National Assembly’s Deliberative Barometer and Policy Focus Productivity Report in Abuja, yesterday, Olukoyede, represented by the Director of Public Affairs, Wilson Uwujaren, faulted the report for being silent on issues of accountability.

He urged organisers of the event, Erudite Growth and Advancement Foundation (ERGAF-Africa) in collaboration with the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Center (CISLAC), to ensure that legislative accountability remains central to governance evaluation.

While applauding the initiative as timely, he stressed that sustainable governance must be rooted in transparency and responsibility.

Earlier, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, represented by Cyril Godwin Hart, said there was a need to constantly raise the bar of representation, lawmaking and oversight to make legislative processes more impactful and deepen Nigeria’s democratic culture.

Also speaking, Professor Abubakar Suleiman, Director General of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies, welcomed the barometer initiative, noting that accurate data and artificial intelligence would play critical roles in promoting transparency and accountability.
