ACReSAL distributes 6,220 bags of climate-resilient seeds to farmers in Gombe

The Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) project has distributed 6,220 bags of drought-resistant seeds to farmer in Gombe state as part of its drive to boost climate-resilient agriculture.

The gesture was made at the opening of a five-day stakeholders’ engagement convened by the Federal Project Management Unit (FPMU) of ACReSAL in Gombe. The forum, focused on the Gali-Lamurde and Hawal-Kilunga basins, is part of a broader national initiative to develop 20 strategic catchment management plans across Nigeria.

Speaking at the event, ACReSAL’s National Project Coordinator, Dr. Abdulhamid Umar, stressed the urgency of tackling environmental degradation in the Northeast and other vulnerable regions in the country.. He emphasized that empowering communities along catchment areas remained central to ACReSAL’s mission.

Meanwhile, the Gombe State ACReSAL Project Coordinator, Dr. Sani Adamu Jauro, reaffirmed the state’s commitment to addressing critical ecological challenges, commending the state governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya’s leadership for fostering an enabling environment that has attracted transformative interventions such as ACReSAL.

Governor Yahaya, represented by the Commissioner for Water, Environment, and Forest Resources, Mohammed Saidu Fawu, described the engagement as timely and aligned with the state’s green agenda. He highlighted landmark initiatives, including the Gombe Goes Green (3G) project, which has seen over five million trees planted in five years, and the revitalization of the Balanga Dam to enhance food security in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

He said, “in steadfast alignment with the Federal Government’s target of restoring four million hectares of degraded land by 2030, Gombe State has emerged as a beacon of environmental renewal”. He also appreciated the Federal Ministry of Environment, ACReSAL leadership, and the World Bank for their technical and financial support in driving the project’s goals.

The inputs distributed by ACReSAL at the event, included rice, maize, millet, and guinea corn varieties designed to withstand harsh weather conditions.
