From Oluseye Ojo, Ibadan

The pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has said the declaration of every July 7 as World Amotekun Day by the United Nations is a big booster for regional security efforts in the South West.

In statement issued by the National Publicity  Secretary of Afenifere, Jare Ajayi, the organisation hailed the milestone, emphasising the significance of Amotekun in promoting safety across Yorubaland.

“The recognition of Amotekun by the United Nations is unprecedented in this part of the globe,” he noted.

Ajayi cited the security outfit’s impressive track record in combating crime and enhancing safety.

The news on the UN’s gesture came on the heels of a certificate of affiliation presented by the President of the World Peace, Ambassador Peer Stafsen, to the Commandant of the Ondo State Amotekun Corps, Akogun Adetunji Adeleye during a ceremony in Akure. The World Peace is an arm of the UN.

The affiliation certificate was issued under the auspices of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and the International Association of World Peace Advocacy.

With the affiliation, Amotekun will participate in UN meetings, including the upcoming 80th anniversary General Assembly in New York on September 22.

Stafsen drew attention to the certification, which certifies Amotekun as a trained security unit acknowledged by the UN. It also lauded Amotekun’s role in protecting lives and property in the South West of Nigeria.

The apex Yoruba organisation also commended the late former governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu, for the pivotal role he played in establishing the Amotekun initiative, alongside South West governors, who championed regional security amid various security challenges.

Afenifere noted that since its launch on January 9, 2020, Amotekun has become a critical player in ensuring safety and combating crime, allowing it to draw interest from other states eager to replicate its success.

In light of the international recognition, Afenifere urged governments of the six states in the South West to enhance the capabilities of the Amotekun Corps.

The spokesperson of Afenifere made a case for equipping of personnel and reinforcement of their morale to ensure optimal operation in the face of ongoing security issues.

Afenifere also advocated swift establishment of state police to bolster local law enforcement efforts.
