Akwa Ibom varsity receives N14.5b for TETFund projects in 15 years

The former governor of Katsina State and Chairman of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) Board of Trustees, Aminu Bello Masari, has said that Akwa Ibom State University, Ikot Akpaden in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area, has received the sum of N14.5b within 15 years for various projects in the institution.

Speaking during the commissioning of five TETFund projects at Akwa Ibom State University, Ikot Akpaden, Masari reiterated the core mandate of TETFund, adding that it has commissioned projects across beneficiary institutions in all six geopolitical zones in Nigeria.

Projects inaugurated at Akwa Ibom State University include the Faculty of Biological Sciences building, Faculty of Physical Sciences building, Faculty of Engineering building phase 1, Faculty of Management Sciences building, and Faculty of Agriculture Laboratories/Classroom Administrative buildings.

Masari explained that Akwa Ibom State University has collected over N14.5b for different intervention projects, including those commissioned within the year.

“Since 2010, Akwa Ibom State University has consistently benefited from TETFund’s interventions.

“From 2010 to 2025, the University has received a total allocation of 14,476,013,835.31 (Fourteen billion, Four hundred and Seventy-six million, Thirteen thousand, Eight hundred and thirty-five Naira, thirty-one kobo only) specifically for infrastructure-related projects under the Annual, Special, Zonal, and Special High-Impact intervention lines.”

He said TETFund is committed to creating an enabling environment that stimulates creativity and innovation, thereby positioning institutions as active contributors to national growth and development.

“This aligns perfectly with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Administration.”

Masari commended the university for the successful completion of the projects despite prevailing economic realities and price volatility.

“It demonstrates the resilience and commitment of the University’s administration to sustain academic excellence despite the challenges facing the education sector.”

Masari disclosed that the five projects inaugurated cost over N7b and warned students against vandalism.

“Of this amount, a substantial portion has already been accessed, with only about N2.67 billion (Two billion, Sixty-seven million Naira only) outstanding for access as ongoing projects reach maturity and completion.

“This is a remarkable achievement. With sustained judicious use of these funds, I am confident that the University will continue to position itself as a beacon of academic excellence and research, not only within this region but globally.”

He said TETFund was ready to reposition the education sector in strategic areas such as power supply in tertiary institutions, upgrading of medical facilities, investment in ICT innovations, and promoting research and development.

The Vice-Chancellor of Akwa Ibom State University, Prof Nse Essien, in his remarks, listed the benefits of the projects and appreciated TETFund for their interventions.

“Apart from enabling more advanced research and laboratory work in fields like environmental biology, genetics, biotechnology, and microbiology, the Faculty of Biological Sciences will make a substantial contribution to preparing scientists and public health experts to tackle regional and worldwide issues.

“This infrastructure will promote innovation, hands-on learning, and the advancement of STEM education.

“Let me insist that these projects have been carefully carried out and satisfy contemporary requirements for functionality, safety, and accessibility. Thus, teaching, research, student enrolment, and industry partnership will all be directly impacted.”
