To give is a practical effort. It is an act of kindness. Giving becomes selfless if the the benefactor demands or expects nothing from the beneficiary or beneficiaries in return, including praises. That is why it is widely said that, “the hand of the giver is always on top”. Most givers share a common attribute and purpose: They give to put smile, joy and happiness on the faces of people; they make the difference in the lives of the people they give. No wonder David Prichard, also known as Skip Prichard, an American business executive who serves as president and CEO of OCLC, a global nonprofit computer library service and research organization said that “happiness doesn’t result from what we get, but from what we give”. Many, especially adherents of the Christian religion, argue that anointing from above triggers a lot of miraculous things. They believe that it is only when one is under the influence of anointing that he or she engages in philanthropic activities notwithstanding the size or weight of their pockets or financial wherewithal. However, there is a school of thought that also believes that giving has nothing to do with spiritual push or anointing. Those who belong to this school of thought are of the view that some “givers” give, not necessarily from their hearts or selflessly, but to boost their ego or to curry public attention and praises.
Penultimate week, perhaps under the influence of “anointing”, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu surprised many Nigerians when he made humongous donations to Nigeria’s Female national team, the Super Falcons as a reward for their historic victory in the WAFCON tournament. The President had approved a cash award of the naira equivalent of $100,000 to each of the 24 players, and $50,000 equivalent to each technical team member.
He also awarded each player and technical crew member the title of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON).

President Tinubu equally directed the allocation of one three-bedroom apartment to each player and technical crew member in the government’s Renewed Hope Housing Scheme
While Nigerians were still processing the hefty presidential largesse, 24 hours later, the wife of the president, Her Excellency, Senator Remi Tinubu, arrived Benue to give succour to the victims of the deadly bandits’ attacks on communities in the state. She announced a N1 billion humanitarian intervention under the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI). The donation aimed at rebuilding war-torn communities and resettling thousands of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) across the state.
The N1billion donation was, perhaps another presidential “anointing” inspired giving but this time around it came via the office of the First Lady, a unconstitutional contraption that is alien to the the Nigerian constitution.
And last week, like the Super Falcons, Nigeria’s national women’s basketball team, D’Tigress also made the country proud by clinching their historic fifth consecutive AfroBasket title, outplaying Mali 78–64 in the final held at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
The historic victory marks the team’s 7th overall championship, effectively stamping their supremacy in African women’s basketball. Apparently to stave off the accusation of double standard, the President on Monday, August 4th, extended to the national female Basketball team, the same “love” he had shown to the Super Falcons: He honoured Nigeria’s national women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, with a reward package that includes $100,000 for each player, $50,000 for every member of the 11-man coaching and technical crew.
President Tinubu also rewarded all team members and staff with a three-bedroom flat at the Renewed Hope Estate.
In addition, the President conferred on the players and their technical crew the prestigious national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger.
Since anointing starts from the head, it is logical that it trickles down to the foot.Every Nigerian, therefore, ought to benefit from the abundance of the First family, not necessarily in terms financial donation. For their endurance and perseverance in the face of excruciating economic hardship, the first family should reward Nigerians with good governance. Majority of Nigerians are currently ravaged by hunger. Many have turned to beggars- Often smartly dressed, some unemployed young Nigerians are now corporate beggars, roaming bus stations, Eateries, Fuel stations and even banks begging for survival- to survive the parlous and worsening economic situation in the country.
Since President Tinubu and his wife are now under the influence of “anointing” which is pushing them to dole out billions of Naira to a select few, I fervently pray that the anointing push them to all parts of the country, including the South south and Southeast where ecological and environmental degradation as well as armed militancy have caused untold devastation. All what we are asking for is good governance, Mr. President, please, dole out good governance to us! It is only when and if this is done that we can conveniently applaud the president and his wife.
Yes, the First Lady’s presence in Benue was to wipe away tears and console families affected by the Yelewata and other massacres in the state. it is highly commendable but such humanitarian visit that oozes oil of human kindness should also spread across the country wherever human carnage akin to the Benue massacre has been experienced.
I’m of the view that the Renewed Hope Agenda of the administration should be appreciated and the brains behind its idea and formulation commended. Never before in the history of Nigeria have we witnessed such huge donations to an embattled community, however, an adage says the evil that men do lives after them.
The young men that took to perpetrating these blood- shilling mayhems in Benue and other parts of the country, who have made the forests their abode are worst than beasts, they are, as legendary late Afro music exponent, Fela Kuti sang in one of his famous hits “Animals in human skin”. They should be fished out and dealt with. Every Nigerian should encourage the military currently at the front line of the war against insurgency and banditary. Though the actual number of casualties of the war- civilians and soldiers alike- since 2018 when insurgency and banditary first reared their heads in an alarming proportion, are not known, the only way to honour their memory is to increase the tempo of the fight with the ultimate aim being total victory over the bloodthirsty agents of destruction and death.
I once asked the former Chief of Army Staff, General Brutai if he could disclose the number of soldiers who had fallen in the war against insurgents and bandits, he shook his head and said, “you can’t ask me that question, go and ask the Chief of Defense Staff”
I believe that if the marching order the Commander- In-Chief of the Nigerian Armed forces, President Tinubu gave to his Service Chiefs to crush the insurgents and bandits responsible for the recent killings in Benue , Plateau, Zamfara, Katsina, Niger and Nasarawa states, the bloodbath wouldn’t have since ended and neither would the first family have had any reason to travel out of Abuja on a sympathy trip to Benue. There wouldn’t also been any need for her to donate N1billion to the state.
Part of the common complaints of soldiers at the theatre of the on- going war against armed bandits and insurgents in the Northern part of the country is lack of adequate welfare. So,I recommended that eye- popping financial donations should also be considered for the fighting troops. If such amount is presented to the military to cater for the the soldiers, including wounded soldiers in the hospital, and to further equip the military, the gesture will go a long way to act as a morale booster.
Congratulations!
