Army Chief emphasises data management, record-keeping as key to operational efficiency

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, has underscored the importance of effective record-keeping and data management in improving operational efficiency, strategic decision-making, and accountability within the Nigerian Army.

Oluyede, represented by the Deputy Director General, Nigerian Army Future Heritage and Future Centre (Army), Major General Philip Eromosele, made the remarks at the opening of the Army Headquarters Department of Military Secretary Data Management and Record-Keeping Seminar 2025, held at the Armed Forces Officers’ Mess, Asokoro, Abuja.

He noted that the seminar reflects the Army’s renewed commitment to advancing modern approaches to information and data systems in line with contemporary security demands.

“Accurate data management and efficient record-keeping are vital tools for monitoring progress, identifying gaps, and effectively addressing emerging security challenges,” the COAS said. He added that adherence to high standards in data storage and document security across all levels was essential for driving efficiency in military operations.

Commitment to Constitutional Mandate
General Oluyede reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s unwavering dedication to its constitutional responsibilities, pledging its loyalty to the Federal Republic of Nigeria and to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.

According to him, strengthening record-keeping processes would not only enhance professionalism within the Army but also ensure better transparency and accountability in line with global best practices.

Promoting Excellence in Data Practices
In his welcome address, the Military Secretary (Army), Major General Everest Okoro, explained that the seminar was designed to promote excellence in data management and record-keeping in line with evolving technological trends.

He commended the COAS for his visionary leadership and guidance, which, he said, had been instrumental in steering the Department toward achieving its objectives.

The three-day seminar, themed “Effective Data Management and Record Keeping: A Key Element in Ensuring a Professional Nigerian Army in a Digital Era”, will feature discussions on global best practices, digital innovations, and strategies for strengthening institutional efficiency through modern information management systems.
