The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) says one week after it communicated the decision of the National Executive Council (NEC) to issued 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to implement its demands or face an industrial action, no respond has been received.
The President of ASUU, Prof. Christopher Piwuna, in a circular to members dated October 5, 2025, said the NEC resolutions were immediately communicated to the Minister of Labour, Minister of Education and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
His words: “It is now one week since those resolutions were reached and communicated to the appropriate authorities. I regret to inform you that there is no meaningful development deserving of any consideration to be report.”
Piwuna said NEC based on the results of the referendum held across branches, agreed to give government 14-day ultimatum to resolve the issues contained in the negotiated document, which was transmitted to the government since February 2025.
According to him, the union further resolved to proceed on a two-week warning strike at the expiration of the ultimatum if government fails to take acceptable and satisfactory steps to address the lingering demands.
The ASUU president said the goal of the current struggle remains to compel government to sign and implement the renegotiated agreement document, amongst other demands.
Piwuna disclosed that the days ahead call for mobilization of members to ensure unity of purpose, adding, “no one should be left out of the struggle to our welfare, stem Japa syndrome and reposition the Nigerian University System for global competitiveness.’’
“We are strong when we organize, but weaken when we agonise. Our union has always acted in solidarity as a collective, this action will not be different,’’ he noted.
