At IGP confab, Ondo CP goes tough, reads riot act to criminals

Commissioner of Police, Ondo State Command, Mr. Adebowale Lawal, has read the riot act to criminals, just as 30 suspected kidnappers, armed robbers and cultists were arrested and seven victims rescued. He told the Inspector General of Police (IGP) conference in Abuja: “My vision is to configure the security architecture to ensure efficiency and effectiveness of personnel to be professional and respect fundamental rights of the citizens. Our operatives now leverage forensic tools red-time surveillance digital tracking and coordinated data analysis to proactively detect, disrupt and dismantle criminal network operating within and beyond the state.

“This inter-agency cooperation and public support have led to successes in tackling crimes such as kidnapping, armed robbery, cultism, sexual violence, vehicle theft and ritual killing. We aim at updating the public on several high impact investigations, major arrests, successful rescue operations and critical recoveries in the past few weeks.

“These breakthroughs are a testament to the professionalism, dedication and evolving capacity of the command to meet the ever changing dynamics of crime in our society. The command remains resolute in its mission to ensure the protection of life and to maintain law and order.

“We have intensified operations through a multi-dimensional approach anchored on intelligence-led policing, community collaboration and strategic deployment of technology. We aim to assess operational effectiveness of the units, identify challenges and implement effective solutions.   

“The command will imbibe community policing by showing commitment to professionalism. We have improved our relationship with members of the public. Ondo is now calm and safe.

“The command has put in place adequate security arrangements in liaison with other security agencies. The public should be vigilant and report suspicious activities to the nearest security agency. We will continue to intensify efforts in combating crimes through proactive policing, intelligence gathering and swift response to distress calls.

“I have warned officers to shun corruption and illegal duties. They should cultivate good relationship with the public. They should dress decently and be hardworking. We are here to serve the public. My door is open to receive complaints and vital information from the public.

“It is my commitment to build an effective and accountable police force that enjoys the trust and confidence of Nigerians. It will be too hard for hoodlums to carry out operation to terrorise innocent citizens. I visited some black spots and redeployed some tactical team operatives.

“Police arrested 29-year-old who staged his own kidnapping to defraud family and friends with N500,00. The Anti-Kidnapping Squad (AKS) arrested a suspect for threatening to kidnap and kill the victim and demanded N10million ransom.

“Suspected armed robbers were arrested in Akure and Owo. We raided criminals’ hideouts in Akure and recovered dangerous weapons. Depuy Commissioner of Police, Operations, Oluseyi Okenla, is coordinating Tactical Team Area Command, AKS, Anti-Cultism Squad and Tactical Intelligence Response Squad.

“They have stepped up surveillance and patrols to deter crime. They smoked out criminals from their hideouts. Ore Area command arrested two suspects and recovered stolen vehicle   a white LT bus with Reg LND 407 YF heading toward Ore-Benin axis.

“The Special Operation Squad (SOS) rescued an abducted 17-year-old student of Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology  (OAUSTECH). Four suspected members of Ogboni cult were arrested.

“Police in Owo arrested suspected cult member of Eiye Confraternity. Operatives on patrol recovered Toyota Highlander suspected to be used for operation. Police Special Weapons Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) arrested eight suspects selling stolen vehicles. Anti-Kidnapping Unit arrested suspected kidnappers who raped and murdered students of Adekunle Ajasin University (AAU), Akugba-Akoko.

“Operatives arrested a wanted cultist member of proscribed confraternity in his hideout in IIe-Oluji. He was involved in murder, armed assault and cult rivalry clashes. We appreciate the state government in supporting us with operational vehicles.

“Inspector General of Police Olukayode Egbetokun’s vision is to fight crime and criminality, uphold justice, fairness, protect human dignity and restore standards and values. There will be proactive response to criminal activities. We will engage in robust and effective human and technical intelligence gathering process to enhance capacity.

“We need support of Obas, community leaders, students and stakeholders to give us useful information to enable us and other sister agencies to work together for the safety of the state.”
