Babcock University (BU), Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State, recently commissioned 12 projects in their quest to boost research and learning among staff and students of the institution.

The projects commissioned includes a Senate Building named after BU’s first Vice Chancellor, Prof. Adekunle Alalade; the New Horizons Tech Hub; N70 million solar-powered electricity system at the Laz Otti Memorial Library, whose fund were sourced by the graduating class; roads and walkways to Wole Olanipekun Law Auditorium; senior staff quarters; a childrens crèche within at BU teaching hospital; and BUSA swimming pool donated by 2025 graduating students and extension of Babcock University guesthouse.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ademola Tayo, who led the tour of the newly completed projects, described the developments as part of the institutions commitment to blending technological advancement with academic excellence and student well being.

Prof. Tayo, whose tenure will end on November 31st, 2025, said the projects will help the university to achieve the quest to make BU a pacesetter in digital innovation.

Tayo noted that the newly commissioned Senate Building, housing the VCs office and Senate Chambers, is intended to bolster the administrative efficiency of the institution.

According to him, the New Horizons Tech Hub is equipped with Artificial Intelligence labs, incubation centres, and other facilities to ensure the students and staff becomes creators of technology and not consumers.

He disclosed that the aims of BU is to impact on nations the digital space and stressed that Africas digital GDP still relies largely on telecommunications and FinTech, with its infrastructure and innovation hubs still underdeveloped.

On the swimming pool, the VC revealed that the reason for the construction of the pool is to reinforce BUs commitment to students all-round development.

He explained that without such outlets, students may be tempted toward negative behaviours such as cultism and stressed that a balanced education must address mental, physical, and emotional growth.

His words: Technology is redefining work and life globally. From robotic surgeries to automated farming and FinTech, every sector is being reshaped by digital tools. Sadly, Nigeria remains a consumer rather than a creator of these technologies. At Babcock, we are changing that narrative. Nigerian cultural tourism packages.

The university also commissioned a purpose-built crèche at the university’s teaching hospital and observed that the facility was conceived to support frontline medical personnel by providing safe, professionally managed care for their young children while they are on duty.

Said she: “We discovered there was no dedicated space for the children of our doctors and nurses. Exposing infants to hospital environments without protection could lead to health risks. This crèche, staffed by professionals in developmental psychology and social work, solves that problem.”

A major highlight of the day was the commissioning of a N70 million solar-powered backup system for the university’s Laz Otti Memorial Library, which was initiated by the graduating class of 2025.

The VC noted that despite BU already enjoying an average of 22 hours (Band A) of electricity daily, the 2025 graduating students decided to install solar systems to improve on electricity power supply to boost learning resources.
