Bayer Leverkusen sack Erik ten Hag after 3 games

Bayer Leverkusen have sacked Erik ten Hag after just three matches in charge, following a disappointing start to the Bundesliga season.

The Dutch tactician was appointed in May as the successor to Xabi Alonso at the Bay Arena.

Leverkusen earned only one point from their first two Bundesliga games under Ten Hag, who oversaw a 2-1 home defeat to Hoffenheim on the opening weekend and a 3-3 draw against Werder Bremen where the team conceded two late goals despite their opponents being reduced to ten men.

However, the team cruised to a 4-0 win over Sonnenhof Grossaspach in the DFB-Pokal.

Reports from Germany say the decision to fire the manager was made by the club’s hierarchy on Monday morning, with Ten Hag informed immediately.

In a brief statement, the club said: “Bayer 04 has parted ways with head coach Erik ten Hag with immediate effect.”

The assistant coaching staff will take charge until a permanent successor can be named.

The sacking marks ten Hag as the third former Manchester United manager to lose his job in the past week, following Ole Gunnar Solskjær at Besiktas and José Mourinho at Fenerbahce.

No immediate comment was available from Ten Hag.
