The family of late former President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed deep appreciation to President Bola Tinubu and First Lady, Remi Tinubu, alongside Nigerians and the international community, for their support and solidarity during the mourning and burial of the former Nigerian leader.

In a statement signed by Garba Shehu on behalf of the Buhari family, Malam Mamman Daura—the most senior member of the family—conveyed heartfelt thanks to President Tinubu and the government for their gestures, including declaring a public holiday and renaming the University of Maiduguri in Buhari’s honour.

“It is truly comforting to receive such support from the President and the Vice President, Kashim Shettima, who went to the United Kingdom, and here in Daura, for the days he and the ministers spent with us during the mourning period,” said Daura in the statement. “These have instilled confidence in all of us to face this loss with courage.”

The statement highlighted the outpouring of sympathy from world leaders, including King Charles III of England, the United Nations Secretary General, the African Union Chairman, and regional leaders from ECOWAS. “Our gratitude also goes to leaders of various countries around the globe who either came in person, sent representatives, sent letters, or placed personal telephone calls to commiserate with us,” Shehu noted.
Daura described Buhari’s passing as an “irreparable loss,” but said the widespread condolences and support have helped the family cope. “The general reaction and kind expressions give us the strength to cope with the loss of our esteemed family member and former leader of the country,” the statement read.

The family also applauded the efforts of Vice President Shettima and his wife, state governors, former leaders, and traditional rulers across Nigeria and neighboring countries.

Special mention was made of Governor Dikko Umar Radda of Katsina, Professor Babagana Zulum of Borno, Dr Peter Obi, as well as several former and serving governors for their compassionate words and presence.

“We express our deep appreciation to former Vice Presidents Atiku Abubakar, Architect Namadi Sambo, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, and Ambassador Babagana Kingibe as well as to the President of Senate, Godswill Akpabio, the Speaker, House of Representatives, Honorable Tajudeen Abbas, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin and other leaders and members of the National and State Assemblies,” the statement added.

Acknowledging the solidarity from traditional, religious, and business leaders, Daura thanked Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Abdul Samad Rabiu, and others for their visits, alongside various community associations, civil society groups, security agencies, and Nigeria’s citizens at large. “All of Nigeria came out in force to bury Buhari and condole with us and pray for him,” he said.

“We are deeply grateful for the visits, the condolence messages, and prayers on him. We are thankful to all.”

He concluded, “We respect your prayers as I and the family go through this period. May the Almighty Allah bless and reward you all.”
