Commander denies Boko Haram hit Borno military base

From Timothy Olanrewaju, Maiduguri

The Theatre Commander Joint Task Force Northeast Operation Hadin Kai, Maj Gen Abdulsalam Abubakar, has refuted claims of a terrorist attack on a military base in Borno last weekend.

Gen Abubakar, in a message to journalists in Maiduguri yesterday, said the reported Boko Haram attack on a military base at Kirawa took place in Cameroon and not on Nigerian territory, as reported by some news outlets.

Terrorists believed to be Boko Haram attacked Kirawa, a town in northern Cameroon, late Saturday. The Cameroonian town shares a similar name with Kirawa, a community in Gwoza Local Government of Borno State, located southeast of Maiduguri, the state capital, and around the border area with the Republic of Cameroon.

The terrorists destroyed some military operational vehicles and equipment at the military base in the area, according to sources. They also abducted a few girls.

The Theatre Commander insisted the weekend attack on military troops occurred in Cameroon’s Kirawa and not in Borno’s town.

“It’s the Cameroonian base at Kirawa that was attacked, not the Nigerian troops,” the Commander disclosed in a message.

Media reports claimed the terrorists abducted some girls in the attack and destroyed military equipment.
