From Isaac Job, Uyo

The proverbial saying that “evil can not occur to a man who shows kindness to his fellow man” did not fullfil in the life of 42-year-old Christopher Enobong Jimmy, who was shot dead by a soldier after he offered him a lift to his destination.

The incident occured along the Akwa Ibom axis of the  East West road from Port Harcourt.

The report stated that Jimmy, who is a manager in a clearing and forwarding company at Onne Ports in Rivers State was driving from his base to to his village on May 23, 2021 .

As he was driving past the trailer park in Onne, he saw a soldier dressed in full military outfit and armed with AK- 47 rifle. He flagged him down for a lift to Ette Junction in  Ikot Abasi – the same destination  of Jimmy .

Jimmy, a kind hearted gentleman and generous to a fault, stopped and offered a lift to the soldier, who was later identified as Corporal Iweh from Ameke Nkor of Ngor Okpala Local Government Area in Imo state.

According to security sources, the 39-year-old corporal, as they were approaching Oboro junction in Ikot Abasi, Akwa Ibom State part of the road from Port Harcourt pulled out his AK – 47 rifle and shot his benefactor directly on the chest. And the man died on the spot .

Corporal Iweh pulled out the body, dumped it by the roadside and escaped with the grey colour Toyota matrix car. He diverted to Aba in Abia State but had to take a short rest at Andy Guest House in Ukanafun local government area along Aba- Azumini express road in Akwa Ibom State to continue his journey the following day.

But unknown to him, the car he  snatched and killed the owner had a security tracker which the police used to track him immediately the family of the victim recovered the body and reported to the police at Ikot Akpan Abia Police Headquarters Uyo.

He was later traced to Andy Guest House in Ukanafun, many kilometers from the scene of crime, where he was arrested and the rifle recovered. Investigation revealed that Iweh was attached to 6 Battalion, Ibagwa in Abak council area, Akwa Ibom State

It was further discovered that

Iweh, a father of three, had illegally kept the AK-47 rifle which he said he “picked at Dambou, Borno State in 2018 and decided to keep it as personal arms.”

On the day he committed the crime, Iweh was supposed to be on duty at the Army Store, 6 Battalion, Ibagwa, Abak, but abandoned his post for the heinous crime.

Delivering judgement on the matter last weekend at Uyo High Court ,

the trial judge, Hon. Justice Bassey Nkanang held that the prosecution proved beyond reasonable doubt that Iweh, a native of Ameke Nkor in Ngor Okpala Local Government Area of Imo State, murdered Christopher Enobong Jimmy, an indigene of Ikot Abasi, robbed him of his Toyota Matrix car, while armed with an AK-47 rifle and unlawfully possessed the firearm without a license.

Nkanang said during police investigations, it was discovered that Corporal Iweh, a father of three children, who joined the Nigerian Army in 2002, had illegally kept the AK-47 rifle which he said he “picked at Dambou, Borno State in 2018 and decided to keep it as personal arm.”

He said the court records showed that  Iweh, who was recruited into the Army in 2002 was later traced to Andy Guest House in Ukanafun, where he was arrested and an AK-47 rifle recovered from him.

He was convicted on a three count charge of murder, robbery and illegal possession of firearm

and sentenced to death by hanging for murder, death by hanging for armed robbery, and 10 years imprisonment for unlawful possession of firearms.

In his plea for mercy, the convict begged the court for what he described as a “soft landing,” but his allocutus was rejected.

The late Christopher Jimmy is survived by his 34-year-old widow, Arit, who tearfully recounted that her husband had left Port Harcourt to visit his sister and family in Ikot Abasi, but did not return home.
