The Edo State Government has successfully rescued a 20-year-old woman, Iwinosa Okunrobo, from Burkina Faso, where traffickers had exploited her for five years. Lured by false promises of better opportunities abroad, Iwinosa was taken to Burkina Faso at just 15 years old.
Rescue Operation and Commitment by Governor Okpebholo
This rescue operation involved the Edo State Government, the Office of the First Lady, and the Edo State Migration Agency. Authorities acted after a TikTok video featuring Iwinosa went viral, in which she pleaded for help. Upon her rescue, Iwinosa reunited with her family in a heartfelt ceremony at the Government House in Benin City.
During the ceremony, Governor Monday Okpebholo emphasized the state’s commitment to fighting human trafficking. He announced plans to enforce the Edo State Trafficking in Persons Law of 2018 vigorously. This law aims to protect vulnerable women and children from exploitation.

Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo, Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady, expressed joy at Iwinosa’s rescue. She noted that Iwinosa’s story serves as a powerful example of resilience. Furthermore, Mrs. Okpebholo promised that the government would provide the necessary care and support for Iwinosa’s recovery. This support includes rehabilitation, education, and healthcare services.
Additionally, Lucky Agazuma, Director General of the Edo State Migration Agency, traveled to Burkina Faso to facilitate Iwinosa’s return. He praised Governor Okpebholo and Mrs. Anani for their dedication to combating human trafficking. Agazuma also warned parents about societal pressures that can make young people vulnerable to traffickers.
