Eddie Howe, the manager of Newcastle United, acknowledged that his players did not play at their best during Sunday’s 2-1 loss to Arsenal.
At St. James’ Park, Nick Woltemade gave the Magpies the lead with a brilliant header in the first half. Although the hosts scored against the run of play, the Gunners fought back to take all three points in the second half.
Substitute Mikel Merino and Gabriel Magalhães scored as Arsenal moved into second place, two points behind leaders Liverpool.
Howe accepted Newcastle were not at their best on the day, despite some excellent saves from goalkeeper Nick Pope.
“I don’t think we were at our best today, being honest. Arsenal played very well,” Howe said.
“We had our chances in the game and we took the lead and we were desperate to try and hang on to that lead.
“Nick [Pope] made some good saves for us, but it wasn’t to be, and we conceded set-pieces at the end. It was so disappointing.”
