The remains of former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Agunwa Anaekwe, will be laid to rest on Friday, October 17, 2025, at his country home in Adazi-Ani, Anambra State.
The burial date was jointly agreed upon by the Anaekwe family and the Central Funeral Committee.
Anaekwe, who died on July 5, 2025, at the age of 69 after an illness, was widely regarded for his contributions to public service.
The Media and Publicity Sub-Committee, led by IfeanyiChukwu Afuba, has clarified that the correct spelling of the late politician’s surname is “Anaekwe,” correcting earlier variants in circulation.
While in university, he served as acting president of the National Association of Nigerian Students before venturing into politics.
He was elected to the House of Representatives in August 1992 on the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP). On December 5, 1992, he became Speaker of the House, a position he held until the military takeover in November 1993.
A lawyer by training, Anaekwe was also a founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and later served on the Board of Trustees of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
