An explosion has occurred on the Trans-Niger Pipeline (TNP) in Bodo, Gokana Local Government Area of Rivers State. The incident resulted in a fire, though the exact cause of the explosion remains unknown at this time.
The TNP is a critical pipeline network that transports crude oil from production fields in Rivers and parts of Bayelsa State to the Bonny Crude Oil Export Terminal. This infrastructure plays a vital role in Nigeria’s oil export activities.
Historically, the TNP has experienced similar incidents. In March 2023, an explosion at the Rumuekpe section of the pipeline was attributed to oil theft activities, resulting in multiple fatalities. Additionally, in October 2022, a spill occurred in Bodo due to issues with the TNP, causing environmental damage.
As of now, there is no official statement from the pipeline operators or local authorities regarding the current explosion. Further investigations are anticipated to determine the cause and assess the impact of the incident.
