The Federal Government, through Family Homes Funds Limited (FHFL), has launched a national public-private partnership initiative to transform student accommodation across Nigeria’s tertiary institutions under the Renewed Hope Student Housing Programme, a flagship project of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
The ambitious initiative aims to deliver 38,400 world-class hostel bed spaces across 24 tertiary institutions, including 12 universities, six polytechnics, and six colleges of education. Each project site will feature 1,600-bed hostels with ensuite rooms, reading and study spaces, cafeterias, laundromats, grocery shops, salons, and other modern facilities designed to enhance student welfare and academic performance.
The Renewed Hope Student Housing Programme is being implemented in partnership with the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) and Africa Plus Partners Nigeria Limited, in line with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda to modernise infrastructure and attract sustainable private investment into the education sector.

Construction has commenced in six institutions spread evenly across the country’s Northern and Southern regions. These include Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria; Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi; FCT College of Education, Zuba; Sikiru Adetona College of Education, Science and Technology, Ogun; Akwa Ibom State University; and the College of Education, Warri.
The hostels at the College of Education, Warri, and Akwa Ibom State University are nearing completion and are expected to be commissioned in December 2025.
Each of the 1,600-bed facilities, built to international standards, will soon open to students, providing safe, affordable, and modern living environments that promote academic excellence.
Speaking on the development, the Managing Director of Family Homes Funds Limited, Mr. Abdul Mutallab Mukhtar, described the forthcoming commissioning as a landmark achievement for Nigeria’s higher education sector.
“By providing modern, safe, and affordable hostels, we are ensuring that students have the right environment to live and learn while reducing the stress and risks associated with inadequate accommodation,” he said.
Mukhtar noted that with a national student population exceeding 2.1 million in public tertiary institutions, less than 15 percent currently have access to on-campus housing. He said the Renewed Hope Student Housing Programme represents a timely and transformative intervention that directly addresses this critical gap.
Beyond providing accommodation, the programme is expected to create thousands of jobs, stimulate local economies, and attract private investment in education. Each construction site engages local contractors and artisans, generating employment and supporting small businesses within host communities.
Family Homes Funds announced that construction will soon begin in eight additional institutions under the next phase of the programme, slated to start in October 2025 with commissioning planned for October 2026. The next set of institutions includes the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede; Ebonyi State University; Enugu State University of Science and Technology; Hassan Usman Katsina Polytechnic; Federal University, Lafia; Benue State University, Makurdi; Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi; and Gombe State University.
With these expansions, the Renewed Hope Student Housing Programme moves closer to its goal of providing modern hostels across all six geopolitical zones.
As work advances nationwide, the initiative continues to embody the vision of President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda — using innovative public-private partnerships to deliver critical infrastructure, uplift learning conditions, and expand opportunities for young Nigerians.
Family Homes Funds reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that every Nigerian student has access to decent, affordable housing that fosters learning, safety, and growth, noting that the Renewed Hope Student Housing Programme is not just an infrastructure project but an investment in the country’s future.
