The Federal Government has called on retailers to ensure that recent reductions in food prices are reflected in their sales, warning against the exploitation of consumers.
Speaking on Tuesday at the 2025 Wheat Farmers Green Field Day in Dabi village, Ringim Local Government Area of Jigawa State, the Minister of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Abubakar Kyari, condemned the reluctance of traders to lower prices despite a significant drop in the cost of essential food items.
“The federal government is aware of the significant drop in the prices of food items across major markets, particularly for essential commodities such as flour, sugar, rice, and pasta,” Kyari stated.
He expressed concern that many retailers, bakers, and shop owners had refused to adjust their prices accordingly, describing the practice as unpatriotic and unjust.
“In previous months, stakeholders in the retail value chain raised concerns about the rising cost of food items. Now that the prices have dropped—for example, flour has fallen from N81,000 per bag to below N60,000, and spaghetti from N20,000 to N15,000—it is only fair and just for consumers to benefit from these reductions,” he said.
Kyari reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring food availability and engaging with relevant stakeholders to align prices with market realities.
The event was organized in collaboration with the Flour Milling Association of Nigeria and the federal and Jigawa state governments.
