The Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, has condemned the recent armed attacks in Babanla town, Kwara State, which led to the deaths of several security personnel, including police officers, describing the incident as “barbaric” and a wake-up call for renewed security vigilance across the Southwest region.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Adams expressed deep concern over the growing insecurity, noting that the Babanla attack has forced thousands of residents to flee the town for safety.

He emphasised the urgent need for government intervention and stronger collaboration among security agencies to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.

“This tragic event underscores the critical importance of vigilance, community cooperation, and proactive measures to safeguard lives and property across the region,” Adams stated.

Citing intelligence reports indicating the potential for future attacks by marauders and bandits hiding in forests and border towns, Adams warned that the Kwara incident and other recent attacks in the region point to an imminent security crisis if left unchecked.

He called on state governments, security agencies, paramilitary groups, and relevant stakeholders to urgently implement preventive security measures.

He also reiterated his call for the establishment of state and local government policing systems, which he said would enhance crime detection and local safety.

“Security is a shared responsibility. While the Nigeria Police Force is mandated to ensure public safety, active participation from all leaders, stakeholders, and residents is essential,” Adams said.

He urged citizens to remain vigilant, report suspicious activities, and support local security efforts. According to him, community vigilance, public awareness, and inter-agency collaboration remain key to ensuring lasting peace and stability in the Southwest.
