From Abdulrazaq Mungadi, Gombe
The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, has commended Gombe State as a national model in the revitalization of primary healthcare, citing the state’s results-driven reforms as a blueprint for Nigeria’s health system renewal.
The Minister stated this on Friday, during the commissioning and inspection of the newly upgraded Ture Balam Primary Healthcare Centre in Kaltungo Local Government Area. The facility is among 228 PHCs rehabilitated and equipped by the administration of Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya to expand access to quality and affordable healthcare across the state.

Briefing the Minister, the Executive Secretary of the Gombe State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr. Abdulrahman Shuaibu, stated that the Ture Balam centre now offers 24-hour services and caters to over 5,300 residents.
“Before revitalization, we recorded an average of 15 deliveries monthly; last month alone, we had 27 successful deliveries,” Dr. Shuaibu disclosed, emphasizing a significant improvement in maternal and child health indicators.
In his remarks, Prof. Pate described the Gombe model as exemplary and worthy of replication nationwide. “What Gombe has done demonstrates the power of focused leadership and community-driven health investment. Strengthening grassroots healthcare is central to improving Nigeria’s overall health outcomes,” he stated.
The Minister assured that the Federal Government, under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, will continue to support such impactful initiatives that enhance primary healthcare delivery and ensure no community is left behind.
Meanwhile, Governor Yahaya attributed the progress to sustained political will, deliberate investment, and strong collaboration with development partners.
“What we are witnessing today at Ture Balam is proof that when we invest in facilities, incentivize health workers, and sustain partnerships, lives are transformed, and communities become healthier,” the Governor said.
