House of Representatives Forms Committee to Address Rivers State Crisis

The Nigerian House of Representatives has announced plans to establish a committee of eminent Nigerians to mediate the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State. This decision aligns with the Senate’s earlier recommendation for such a committee to engage with the conflicting parties.

In addition, the House has issued a stern warning to the state’s Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Obot-Ette Ibas (retired), emphasizing that he lacks the constitutional authority to enact laws. Deputy Spokesperson Philip Agbese stated that any overreach of power by Ibas could lead to actions such as a vote of no confidence.

The House expects President Bola Tinubu to be aware of its resolutions concerning Ibas’s appointment and mandate. Agbese highlighted that the National Assembly would oversee the administrator’s activities to ensure adherence to the rule of law.

These developments follow the National Assembly’s recent ratification of a state of emergency in Rivers State, aiming to restore stability and order.
