Insurgency dragging for too long; it should end now – Buratai

Former Nigerian Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. General Tukur Buratai, has noted that the ongoing security challenges in the country have dragged for so long, and therefore needed to be brought to an end without further delay.

“It is really unfortunate that security challenges continue to drag for so long, it has really prolonged for too long. Insurgency has permeated the society”. He said.

Buratai who featured on Channel Television, Sunrise programme, discussed ongoing security challenges in the country, emphasizing that insurgency is a prolonged issue requiring a multifaceted approach, involving government, communities, and individuals in the society.

The former COAS  highlighted the importance of community resilience, moral and welfare support for soldiers, and the need for a whole-system approach beyond just military efforts.

He supported  the establishment of state police but cautions about political interference and the necessity for clear operational guidelines and maturity in governance structures.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s political climate, Buratai observed recurring patterns in political evolution and stressed the need for caution, dialogue, and unity amid rising political tensions across the country.

He said while he has entered politics and joined a party, he currently identifies as a statesman and businessman, indicating openness to future political roles but without immediate ambitions.

Buratai’s interview on Television underscored the complexities of Nigeria’s security and political landscape, which he called for collective responsibility and support to address the challenges effectively.
