Isese Day, which honours Yoruba traditional religion and heritage, has evolved into a major cultural celebration throughout Nigeria, particularly in the Southwest.

In Lagos, the holiday has become an annual tradition, allowing residents to participate in rituals, celebrations, and communal gatherings honouring ancestral legacies and Yoruba deities.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, in a statement released by the state government, described the observance as a reminder of the importance of cultural preservation in an increasingly modern society.

“Isese Day is a time to reflect on our rich heritage and values as Lagosians. This work-free day provides an opportunity for our people to connect with their roots, celebrate our traditions, and strengthen unity in our diverse state,” he stated.

The governor’s decision has drawn commendation from traditional rulers and cultural advocates, including the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, who lauded the gesture as a boost to Yoruba spirituality and identity.
