Japa: Clifford Varsity VC tasks govt on welfare of lecturers, health workers

The Vice Chancellor of Clifford University, Owerrinta, Abia State, Professor Chimezie Omeonu has tasked government on the welfare of University lecturers and health workers.

Professor Omeonu said this will help to checkmate the rate at which professionals in those areas travel abroad to seek for greener pastures otherwise known as Japa in local parlance.

The Vice Chancellor gave the task while speaking at the 2nd Induction/oath-taking ceremony for the 2024/2025 Bachelor of Nursing Science graduands of the University.

He said if governments at all levels in the country fail to rise to the occasion and take the bull by the horn by enhancing the welfare of lecturers and health workers, the country would definitely suffer for it.

“Government must do something to improve on the welfare package of University lecturers and health workers in the country to arrest the Japa syndrome.

“This call has become imperative if the country will remain what it ought to be in the comity of nation’s.”

While commending the 68 inductees, the VC appealed to the new nurses not to join the Japa train, but to remain in Nigeria to salvage the country together.

Dr. Al-Hassan Ndagi, Registrar/Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN), reminded the inductees that Nursing was not just a job, but a calling to serve humanity.

Representated by Hassan Abdullahi, the NMCN boss encouraged the inductees to make their marks in society as the next generation of nurses.

“You should serve people with compassion and love and abide by the ethics of the profession”, Ndagi charged the new nurses.

In a lecture titled “Nurses supporting Nurses: from induction to excellence”, the guest speaker, Professor Faith Diorgu of the University of Port Harcourt described Nursing as a community that nurtures, uplifts, challenges and protects its own.

Professor Diorgu said Nursing requires excellence not just in clinical expertise, but in integrity, compassion, accountability and lifelong learning

She told the inductees, “As you take your professional oath, you are not just joining a workforce, you are joining a legacy. You are not just receiving a license, you are embracing a mission.

“Therefore, let the values of compassion, courage, competence and curiosity guide you from your first shift to your final contribution.”

Emeremadu Chimhurumunanya who emerged the overall best inductee thanked all who helped in making their success story.
