Kano: Residents, shop owners decry slow pace of reconstruction work at Zungeru road

From Desmond Mgboh, Kano

Residents of Zungeru Road in Sabon-Gari Area of Kano State have decried the slow pace of work at the Zungeru Road reconstruction site.

The 3.6-kilometre project was awarded in May 2025 by the state government but has recorded little progress in recent weeks, fuelling complaints and protests from residents. Daily Sun observed that work on the site appeared to have been suspended soon after the completion of parts of the culverts.

Some of the shop owners on the corridors of the affected street told Daily Sun that the pace of the project has not only blocked vehicular access to their respective residences, but has badly affected their businesses.

Ladi Abubakar, a shop owner, expressed deep concern, saying that, “With the hike in rent across the state, it is a bit unfair to obstruct our businesses and do little about speedily completing this project. How do they want us to pay our next year’s rent when we are not selling and the customers are not coming because the road is under construction?”

She appealed to the State Governor, Abba Kabiru Yusuf, to direct the construction to resume in full gear, especially as the rains had subsided.

Kano State Commissioner for Works Engineer Marwan Ahmad could not be reached for comment at press time.
