A governorship aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State, Kayode Ojo, has raised the alarm over what he tagged attacks, harassment and arrest of his supporters.
While decrying the continuous harassment of his supporters, Ojo warned the Ekiti State Government to stop using public institutions for partisan purposes and to respect the rule of law.
In a statement by the Secretary of the Kayode Ojo Campaign Organisation, Kayode Oluyemo, yesterday, Ojo described the alleged attack as coordinated by agents of government in connivance with elements within the security agencies and sections of the judiciary.
Ojo also highlighted the various incidents of attacks and arrest, which he said were politically motivated.
“We express deep concern over the continued, orchestrated arrest, prosecution, and detention of our supporters. Every Nigerian citizen has the constitutional right to organise, associate, and campaign peacefully.
“These rights are not privileges but fundamental guarantees that must be respected by all. Suppressing lawful political activity is unconstitutional, unjust, and a threat to peace and stability.
“We strongly condemn the sustained attacks on our members, campaign agents, and property, which appear to be coordinated by agents of government in connivance with elements within the security agencies and sections of the judiciary.”
“We, therefore, urge the security agencies to prevent any breakdown of law and order and call on those involved in these illegal acts to desist immediately. Peaceful democratic competition is the foundation of good governance, and undermining it endangers the unity and progress of our state.
“We appeal to the Ekiti State Government to stop using public institutions for partisan purposes and to respect the rule of law. Security agencies must act professionally and remain neutral. The judiciary must preserve its independence and correct any misuse of authority. The APC leadership must ensure fairness, transparency, and equal protection for all members,” the statement noted.
