From Olanrewaju Lawal, Birnin Kebbi
The African Democratic Congress (ADC), Kebbi State, has denounced all forms of political thuggery in the state and urged political parties, members, to remain calm and embrace peace.
ADC Chieftain and former Governorship candidate in the state Alhaji Ibrahim Mohammad Mera stated this while briefing newsmen after the party’s stakeholders meeting in Birnin Kebbi which was attended by the former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Chika Malami (SAN).
Mera, who noted that there was no need to be engaging in thuggery because of politics, explained that members of ADC are law abiding and would continue to exercise their civil rights in accordance with Nigeria’s laws.

While reading out the communique issued after the meeting, Mera said: “As you are all aware, as part of our determined efforts to consolidate the ADC in Kebbi State by not only expanding its membership but also to ensure we abide by the rules and regulations governing partisan politics as provided for by the laws of the federation.
Therefore, major stakeholders of the ADC in the state convened a crucial meeting to discuss the prevailing insecurity in the state and the emerging culture of political thuggery. Consequently, the ADC notes with serious concern the alarming rise in insecurity within Kebbi State and its adjoining communities. Cases of banditry, kidnapping, and other forms of criminality have continued unabated, leaving citizens traumatised, farmlands deserted, and economic activities in decline.
This regrettable situation, if left unchecked, threatens the very fabric of our society and the peace that Kebbi State has long been known for. Accordingly, we therefore condemn in the strongest terms the current wave of insecurity and call on both the State and Federal Governments, as well as all security formations, to take immediate, coordinated, and intelligence-driven actions to restore law and order.
The safety and welfare of the people must remain paramount. The ADC stands firmly with the people of Kebbi State in demanding a more visible and effective security response that goes beyond rhetoric and focuses on tangible results. Equally disturbing to our great party is the growing normalisation of political violence, intimidation, and thuggery within the political space.
The resort to intimidation, blackmail and physical aggression by some political actors undermines the democratic norms and ethics which casts a dark shadow over the integrity of our political process. Democracy thrives on persuasion, not persecution; on dialogue, not domination.
With these reasons, the ADC categorically condemns these anti-democratic practices and urges all political parties, leaders, and their supporters to recommit themselves to the principles of peace, tolerance, and issue-based politics.
We further call on law enforcement agencies and electoral body to act decisively against perpetrators of political violence, regardless of their affiliations. The era of impunity must end if our democracy is to survive. While assuring the entire people of Kebbi of the resolute determination of the ADC to strictly abide by the laws of the land including the rules and regulations governing partisan politics especially electioneering campaign anytime the ban on campaigned activities is lifted.
This is why we gathered here today to further work out modalities on how to go about our political activities in order to ensure we strictly abide by the law governing political activities in the state and the country at large.
Finally, for the avoidance of doubt, we wish to assure the entire people of Kebbi State that we in the ADC are law abiding citizens and we are determined to always join hands with all the security agencies and law abiding citizens in order to ensure peace and security of our beloved state. We firmly believe that the peace, stability and development of Kebbi State is more important than the ambition of any individual no matter how highly placed.”
He appealed to the people of Kebbi State to register for the Voters Card with the INEC as well, with the ADC stressing that the party is fully ready to reposition Nigeria, the state to economic and security stability.
The meeting was attended by the former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Chika Malami and others.
