Lafarge Africa Plc has launched EcoCrete, Nigeria’s first low-carbon ready-mix concrete.
The product, which reduces carbon emissions by at least 20% compared to conventional CEM I concrete, marks another milestone in Lafarge’s drive to decarbonize the construction sector. The company’s Abuja Ready-Mix plant has already been fully converted to EcoCrete production, setting the pace for wider rollout.
Lolu Alade-Akinyemi, Group Managing Director/CEO, described EcoCrete as a game-changing innovation that combines high performance with reduced carbon footprint. “This is another bold step in our mission to support Nigeria’s transition to a greener economy. Just like our ECOPlanet cement, EcoCrete empowers builders to make smart, sustainable choices without compromising quality,” he said.
Highlighting its versatility, Derek Williamson, Head of Aggregates and Readymix, noted that EcoCrete is ideal for housing, commercial buildings, roads, and bridges. “It provides superior performance while significantly reducing carbon emissions, enabling contractors and architects to achieve sustainability targets,” he explained.
Emmanuel Ilaboya, Head of Innovation and New Product Development, added that EcoCrete goes beyond being a product to becoming a climate-smart solution. “It addresses the urgent need for sustainable construction and offers a scalable alternative that supports Nigeria’s path to sustainable development,” he said.
The company said the launch builds on the earlier success of EcoPlanet Unicem and EcoPlanet Elephant Cement, highlighting its leadership in sustainable construction and aligning with Holcim’s global vision of building progress for people and the planet.
