In a significant move to enhance energy access, Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at advancing rural electrification. The ceremony took place in Gusau and attracted key stakeholders, including Abba Aliyu, the Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), and various local organizations.
A Commitment to Energy Access
During the signing, Governor Lawal emphasized the importance of electricity in driving economic development and improving the quality of life for rural communities. “Access to reliable electricity is essential for fostering growth and enabling our people to thrive,” he stated. The MoU outlines a framework for collaboration between the state government and the REA to implement renewable energy projects across rural areas.
Abba Aliyu highlighted that the initiative would focus on deploying off-grid solar solutions, which are particularly suitable for remote communities lacking access to the national grid. “This partnership will empower our communities, improve educational opportunities, and support local businesses,” he added.
Enhancing Local Development
The MoU sets the stage for the establishment of solar mini-grids and solar home systems, providing clean energy to underserved areas in Zamfara. Governor Lawal urged all stakeholders to work collaboratively to ensure the success of the initiative. “Together, we can transform our rural areas and create a brighter future for our citizens,” he concluded.
This strategic agreement marks a crucial step in Zamfara’s efforts to enhance energy access and promote sustainable development in rural communities. With the support of the REA, the state government aims to significantly increase the number of households connected to reliable electricity in the coming years.
