A 23 -years-old man, Abimbola Joseph Olamide has been found guilty and sentenced to one year imprisonment by the Lagos State Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court, Ikeja.
The convict, Olamide was docked before Justice Rahman Oshodi by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC),on a one -count charge, bordering on possession of document containing false pretence.
According to the charge NO.: ID/26228C/2025, the particular of the offence read:”Joseph Olamide Abimbola, on or about the 7th day of May, 2025,in Lagos, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, had in your possession, a document titled: My happiness , containing false pretence, printed out from your Facebook account wherein
you represented yourself as a lady to unsuspecting members of the public, which document you knew or ought to have known to be false”.
The prosecution held that offence, possession of document containing false pretence is contrary to Section 320 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
After the one-count charge was read to Abimbola, he however, pleaded guilty to the charge and the trial judge called for the review of the case.
The defence counsel, Damola Shodeinde, told the court that the defendant, was a first-time offender, who has learnt a big lesson and that the justice should tamper justice with mercy.
The defendant in his allocution, said:”I am sorry my lord, my colleague led me to do it and I promised to make amends, so please have mercy on me” .
Delivering his judgment, Justice Oshodi ruled:”You have been convicted for possessing the document of false pretence, this is following your voluntary plea of guilty. The offense is punishable by two- years imprisonment, the offence involves possessing the fraudulent document title “My happiness” gotten from your Facebook account. You misrepresented yourself as a lady to deceive members of the public and it damages the reputation of our country globally. I sentence you to the 50% of the prescribed sentence which is 1 year, I offer you an alternative imprisonment under the supervision of Community Service Directorate.”
