Ministry of Interior’s performance index rises to 85% – Tunji-Ojo

From Isaac Anumihe, Abuja

The Ministry of Interior has hit 85 per cent in its performance index—from 62 per cent recorded last year.

Speaking at the closing of the ministry’s sectoral performance review retreat in Suleja, Niger State, at the weekend, the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, said that the target of the ministry is 100 per cent. So, he urged the staff to buckle up to achieve the 100 per cent target next year.

“As I often remind us, your output is my input. If people say the Ministry of Interior is doing well, it is because you are doing well. Without your dedication, neither the permanent secretary nor I could have achieved anything meaningful. You have made us useful,” he said.

While thanking the agencies that contributed to the success, which include the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS), Nigeria Fire Service (NFS), and National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), the minister disclosed that even with such an impressive record, there’s still much work to be done.

“To our agencies—the NIS, NSCDC, NCoS, NFS, and NIMC—I commend your progress, but I also challenge you to do more. From immigration reforms to protection of critical national assets; from correctional transformation to fire and emergency services, and from identity management to data security—there is still much work to be done. I believe in your ability to deliver, not for me, but for Nigerians and for the president who has entrusted you with these responsibilities.

“Let us remember that building strong institutions, not strong individuals, is the ultimate goal. We must create a Ministry of Interior that thrives beyond any single leader. We are agents of the Renewed Hope Agenda. Our task is to ensure Nigerians feel our impact in their daily lives—through safer communities, efficient services, and systems that inspire trust.

“Let us aim higher. If today we scored 85 per cent, let us strive for 100 per cent. Together, we can build a Ministry of Interior that Nigerians will be proud of; a ministry that will give families hope, and a ministry that will help make our country great,” he urged his agencies.

Making reference to the clash between the Nigerian Police and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) officers in Owerri, Imo State, last week, where two persons were shot dead, Tunji-Ojo told the NSCDC officers not to engage in unnecessary clashes with sister security agencies.

“That’s not what you are here for. I always tell you, your responsibility mainly is to protect the critical national assets,” he emphasised.
