Mourinho close to landing Benfica job

By John Ogunsemore

Jose Mourinho is on the verge of landing a new job as Benfica manager.

Benfica are shopping for a new gaffer after sacking Bruno Lage, whose team threw away a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 to Qarabag FK in the Champions League on Tuesday.

ESPN reports Wednesday that Mourinho, 62, is in advanced talks with the club’s management for the role although no agreement has been reached.

In August, Fenerbahce parted ways with the Portuguese tactician after the Turkish club were eliminated from the Champions League play-offs by Benfica.

If signed by Benfica, Mourinho would be returning to coaching in his homeland over two decades after quitting FC Porto for Chelsea in 2004.

The former Real Madrid and Manchester United manager kicked off his coaching career with Benfica in 2000 but was ousted after just 10 games.

The club are seeking a replacement before Saturday’s league game against AVS, with Manchester United’s under-fire boss, Ruben Amorim also linked to the job.
