AFTN is a globally standardised network used for the reliable exchange of aeronautical messages and data between ground-based stations, ensuring safety and efficiency in air traffic management by providing a store-and-forward system for messages related to flight plans, weather reports, and other critical operational information.
This was made known during a sensitisation workshop held in Lagos, where the Director of Air Traffic Services, John Tayo, highlighted the significance of the new systems.
“These installations represent another demonstration of NAMA’s commitment to safety, efficiency, and technological advancement in Nigeria’s aviation sector. The modernised AFTN operates on robust satellite facilities, delivering improved reliability, broader coverage, and greater message transmission efficiency. It also serves as a dependable alternative to the Air Traffic Service Message Handling System (AMHS),” he said.
Explaining the benefits of the upgraded infrastructure, Tayo said that AFTN remains the backbone of aeronautical communication and its functions include the timely transmission of flight plans, meteorological updates, and urgent safety information. “With its standardised protocols, AFTN ensures seamless communication between Nigeria and other states within the ICAO network, strengthening our integration into the global aviation community,” he added.
He said the rollout across 26 airports provides Nigeria with nationwide coverage and a strong communication framework that is expected to support long-term growth in the aviation industry.
“The success of this infrastructure depends not just on its installation, but on how well we operate and maintain it. Let us approach this responsibility with dedication and make Nigeria’s aeronautical communication network a source of pride for Africa,” he said.
