Prince Orji Nwafor-Orizu of Nnewi’s ancient monarchy has raised objections to the National Council for Traditional Rulers of Nigeria (Establishment) Bill, 2024, sponsored by Senator Simon Bako Lalong.
The Bill seeks constitutional recognition for traditional councils and designates the Sultan of Sokoto and the Ooni of Ife as permanent co-chairmen.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Monday, Nwafor-Orizu described the clause naming the two monarchs as “fundamentally flawed,” arguing that laws should not be tied to individuals or specific offices. “It creates an imbalance and ignores the interests of other regions, especially the South East and South South,” he said.
The prince decried the continued marginalization of Ndigbo in governance, citing lopsided appointments with no South East representation. He proposed that the council’s chairmanship rotate among geopolitical zones, similar to the NDDC model, to ensure equity.
Nwafor-Orizu urged the Senate to review the Bill thoroughly, warning that its current form “may create more confusion than solutions.” His remarks underscore growing calls for fairness and inclusivity as the legislation advances.
