The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Anambra State Command, has arrested two suspected members of a tricycle-snatching syndicate known for robbing operators and passengers of their belongings.
The state NSCDC Commandant, Olatunde Maku, confirmed the arrests at the command’s headquarters in Awka on Wednesday, stating that the suspects were apprehended on Tuesday after allegedly snatching a tricycle at Araba Umuzocha, Awka.
According to Maku, operatives acted on a tip-off and intercepted a three-man gang operating along Araba Umuzocha and its environs. The suspects had forcefully snatched a tricycle, commonly called Keke NAPEP, from a victim near Regina Junction by Zik’s Avenue, Awka. Two of the suspects were arrested, while one managed to escape and remains at large.
The arrested suspects were identified as 24-year-old Obum Charles of No. 4 Umueze Road, Amudo Village, Awka, and 27-year-old Chukwunonso Ekeh of No. 36 Onueyiagu Street, Amachala, Awka.
Maku disclosed that the duo is assisting with information that could lead to the arrest of their fleeing accomplice. He added that investigations are ongoing, and the suspects would be prosecuted upon completion.
Preliminary findings indicate that the gang specializes in snatching tricycles and robbing riders and passengers of their valuables.
Commending his team for their swift response, Maku reaffirmed the NSCDC’s commitment to tackling crime and ensuring the safety of lives and property across Anambra State.
