Ntui raises alarm on Etung riverine transport woes

From Aniekan Aniekan, Calabar

Hon Kingsley Ntui, the member representing Etung State Constituency, has sounded the alarm over the transportation woes facing his constituents in riverine communities.

The lawmaker, who made this known during the plenary, sought the support of the State House of Assembly through a motion to address the crisis.

According to Ntui, Etung South has several riverine communities, including Abijang, Nsofang, Mkpot, and Itaka wards, which depend solely on water transportation for their daily activities.

He explained that the absence of motorised marine transport, particularly outboard engines, has exposed the people to dire privations.

“The absence of motorised marine transport, particularly functional outboard engines, has subjected residents to severe transportation hardship, economic stagnation, and limited access to emergency and healthcare services,” Ntui stated.

Supporting the motion, the Deputy Leader of the Assembly, Rt Hon Davies Etta (Abi), stressed the need for the immediate provision of the outboard engines to ease the plight of these citizens.

The Speaker of the Assembly, Rt Hon Elvert Ayambem, and other members unanimously supported the motion, urging the State Government to urgently implement their resolution.

The Assembly also recommended the procurement and distribution of outboard engines to the riverine communities, saying it will promote inclusive development.
