NYSC DG tasks employers on security, welfare of corps members

From Jude Chinedu, Enugu

The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier-General Olakunle Nafiu, has declared that the security and welfare of corps members remain non-negotiable, urging corps employers to recommit to their responsibilities or risk undermining the purpose of the scheme.

Speaking at the 2025 NYSC/Corps Employers’ Workshop, held on Thursday at the International Conference Centre, Enugu, Nafiu expressed concern over a decline in employer support, which he said is contributing to truancy, low productivity, and a lack of discipline among corps members.

“The welfare and security of corps members are not negotiable. Employers are obligated under the NYSC law to provide accommodation, transportation allowance, healthcare, and a safe work environment. Negligence in these areas leaves corps members vulnerable and weakens their ability to serve the nation effectively,” he said.

Nafiu lamented that activities once guaranteed to ensure a productive service year have been abandoned by some employers. “The result is rising truancy, reduced productivity, poor work ethics, and even connivance in truancy-related cases. We must urgently revamp this partnership to restore the patriotic spirit of service.

“We must build new bridges of communication, embrace online platforms for feedback and reporting, and provide quarterly reports on corps members to enhance accountability and service delivery,” he added.

He called on participants to develop actionable solutions that would strengthen the partnership between the scheme and corps employers.

Governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah, who declared the workshop open, commended NYSC for its continued role in nation-building.

He said, “The NYSC Scheme remains a vital tool for development and unity, but its success depends on the active participation of corps employers.

“As a state, we are committed to the welfare of corps members and have continued to invest in the Permanent Orientation Camp in Awgu to provide a safe and conducive environment for them.”

The NYSC State Coordinator for Enugu, Oluwakemi Awolola, echoed the DG’s concerns, noting that while some employers have been exemplary in supporting corps members, gaps remain.

“Some corps members still face underutilization or lack of meaningful engagement, while employers also complain of absenteeism. This workshop is an opportunity for us to address these challenges and deepen our collaboration,” she said.
