The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Princess Adesola Ayoola Elegbeji, as the winner of the by-election into the Remo Federal Constituency, held on Saturday, August 16.
The seat of the Federal Constituency became vacant in the House of Representatives following the death of the former member, Adewunmi Onanuga, otherwise known as ‘Ijaya’, in January.
The election, which took place in Ikenne, Sagamu, and Remo North Local Government Areas that make up the federal constituency, was keenly contested between the ruling APC and the main opposition party, the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP).

While Governor Dapo Abiodun described the poll as peaceful and hailed the security agencies and electoral officers for ensuring a hitch-free exercise, the PDP alleged that the ruling party used thugs to unleash mayhem on its supporters with the pure intent to manipulate the outcome of the election.
But announcing the result of the by-election at the INEC Collation Centre in Ikenne, the Returning Officer, Prof. Kazeem Bello, declared the APC candidate the winner.
According to Bello, the APC polled 10,227 votes in Ikenne LGA, while the PDP candidate got 5,595 votes.
In Remo North LGA, Elegbeji scored 8,052 votes, while the PDP, ADC, and ADP polled 992, 37, and 43 votes, respectively.
The results of the election in Sagamu Local Government Area, as announced by INEC, showed that the APC got 22,958 votes, while the PDP polled 7,737 votes.
Declaring Elegbeji the winner, Prof. Bello announced that the APC candidate polled a total of 41,237 votes, while the PDP candidate, Bolarinwa Oluwole, got 14,324 votes.
