One dead as container-laden truck crushes car near Oyo Secretariat

From Taiwo Oluwadare, Ibadan

A tragic road accident in Ibadan, Oyo State, has claimed the life of a motorist after a 40-foot container-laden truck lost control and fell onto a Nissan Micra car near the Oyo State Government Secretariat, Agodi, on Sunday afternoon.

It was gathered that the driver of the car was trapped under the massive container and died instantly. Despite the quick arrival of rescue teams, including emergency responders and security operatives, the victim could not be saved. His remains were later taken to the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as horrific, noting that the impact of the fallen container completely crushed the small car. The tragic incident caused panic among passersby and disrupted traffic flow around the busy government secretariat area.

Police sources confirmed that the truck, which was travelling from Lagos to Kano, lost control before the container fell off its chassis and landed on the car. The truck driver has since been arrested, and the vehicle impounded for further investigation.

Authorities in Oyo State have expressed concern over the recurring cases of container-related accidents across the country. They have urged truck drivers to ensure their vehicles are properly maintained and containers securely fastened before embarking on long-distance trips.

The accident in Ibadan comes just days after a similar incident in Lagos, where a 40-foot container toppled onto a Toyota Camry. However, in that case, the driver was rescued alive through the swift intervention of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and other emergency responders.
