Saint Lucia’s Prime Minister Philip Pierre has strongly defended the recent visit of Nigerian President Bola Tinubu to the country, condemning opposition groups’ criticisms as “shameful and disgraceful.” Speaking during the 2025 Emancipation Day ceremony in Castries on August 1, Pierre accused the opposition of showing a lack of respect for African leadership and suggested their reaction reflected issues of self-hate.
“Had the visit been by a Head of State from another country, the reception from that group would have been at the very least respectful,” Pierre stated.
He stressed that Saint Lucia’s dedication to strengthening diplomatic and economic relations with Nigeria and the African continent, noting the signing of multiple memoranda of understanding during the visit.
Marking the 191st anniversary of the abolition of slavery, the Prime Minister called on Saint Lucians to address the lingering effects of colonialism while embracing African unity, social progress, and national pride.
“As we honour the sacred memory of our ancestors… we are not only looking back—we are reaching forward,” Pierre declared.
He acknowledged the progress Saint Lucia has made since 1834 but warned that psychological trauma and systemic barriers rooted in slavery still impact some communities. He also condemned internalized colonial values manifesting as self-doubt and disrespect for African heritage.
“There remain, sadly, a few among us who have yet to understand and appreciate the need to lift our people from self-doubt and the harmful effects of colonial values,” he added.
