Oyo Mourns: Former Governor Olunloyo Dies Days Before 90th Birthday

Dr. Victor Omololu Sowemimo Olunloyo, former governor of Oyo State, has passed away at the age of 89, just days shy of his 90th birthday. His family confirmed the news in a statement released on Sunday, April 6, 2025.

Born on April 14, 1935, in Ibadan, Dr. Olunloyo was not only a politician but also a renowned mathematician and engineer. He earned his Ph.D. from St. Andrews University in 1961, focusing his research on numerical solutions in advanced mathematics. Throughout his academic career, he published numerous papers on number theory and applied mathematics, earning him global respect in the field.

Dr. Olunloyo’s political journey began in 1962 when he became Commissioner for Economic Development in the Western Region at just 27 years old. He went on to serve in multiple commissioner roles including Community Development, Education, and Chieftaincy Affairs. He also made a lasting impact on education as the founding rector of The Polytechnic, Ibadan and Kwara State Polytechnic.

In 1983, he served briefly as governor of Oyo State from October to December before the military takeover led by General Muhammadu Buhari.

His passing has triggered a wave of tributes from political leaders, academics, and the public who remember his intellect, leadership, and contributions to national development. The Olunloyo family has requested privacy as burial arrangements are underway.
