Panic as erosion hits Anambra general hospital, destroys fence, culvert, others

From Obinna Odogwu, Awka

A deep gully threatening Amanuke General Hospital, Amanuke in Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State has finally surged into its compound, destroying its fence during a heavy downpour.

The erosion site, estimated to be about 20 feet deep and 17 feet wide, also sliced off a nearby culvert in the area.

On the opposite side, the deep gully is also expanding towards the residential home of Mr. Humphrey Onyekomelu which shares a boundary with the hospital.

A health worker resident in the hospital, Mrs Chinenye Nkemdilim, told Daily Sun that the incident took place between 1am and 3am during a heavy rainfall while they were asleep.

Nkemdilim, a health assistant in the hospital, narrated that the members of staff of the hospital have remained restless ever since the ugly development took place.

She explained that the gully erosion’s nearness to one of their residential quarters had become their major source of worry.

“Our lives are now in serious danger in this hospital. I no longer sleep comfortably at night,” she lamented while calling on the government to intervene quickly.

Across the erosion site, Mr. Onyekomelu told Daily Sun that the gully erosion destroyed a store he built near the culvert sometime last year before this latest development.

He said that when the erosion started widening and becoming deeper, he took the matter to the authorities at the local government headquarters in Achalla but nothing came out of that effort.

Onyekomelu, a community leader, revealed that the erosion had earlier destroyed a toilet facility belonging to the hospital sometime in the past.
