• Vows to remain in party despite challenges
From Sola Ojo, Abuja
The Zamfara State Governor, Adamu Lawal, has attributed the lingering internal crisis within the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to ego battle among some party stakeholders.
He insisted that personal interests had continued to override the collective vision of the party, hoping that the recently set up reconciliatory committee which he is a member, would rescue the party.

Speaking yesterday at a media parley with media executives in Gusau, the state capital, the governor expressed concern at the internal wrangling that has weakened the party’s ability to effectively play its role as the main opposition party.
“What we are witnessing is not ideological difference or policy debate; it is simply a clash of ego and that is not sustainable in a democracy,” he said.
Governor Lawal, however, reaffirmed his loyalty to the PDP, stating categorically that he would not succumb to pressures to defect.
“I’m a PDP governor and I remain in the PDP. I’m not desperate, I’m contented and I believe that my work will work for me if God so wishes in 2027,” he said.
He called on party leaders at all levels to embrace dialogue, put personal ambitions aside, and focus on rebuilding trust and unity within the PDP.
He declared that his administration was on a mission to rescue Zamfara from the ruins of years of neglect, rebuilding critical sectors from the ground up.
“We’re not just renovating buildings, we’re restoring hope. When I came into office in 2023, what I met was heartbreaking. But today, Zamfara is breathing again,” he stated.
In the health sector, Governor Lawal’s flagship achievement so far is the sweeping overhaul of the state’s health system, marked by the commissioning of the renovated specialist hospital by former President Olusegun Obasanjo just a day before the parley.
“This is the first time Zamfara is witnessing such a comprehensive transformation in healthcare,” he said.
Following a state-wide tour in December 2023, the governor declared a state of emergency in the health sector on December 31.
A technical committee was deployed to assess hospitals across the state’s 14 local government areas, and their findings led to a wave of reconstructions and upgrades, the governor said.
“Hospitals in Bukuyum, Maradun, Maru, Kaura Namoda, and even the state capital, Gusau, have completely transformed, now boasting of state-of-the-art equipment, including solar-powered infrastructure, CT scanners and MRI machines.
“My administration has also introduced a Health Management Information System (HMIS) to ensure accurate patient tracking, effective drug inventory management and streamlined service delivery across all facilities.
“Sustainability is key. So, we’ve retained the equipment suppliers for ongoing maintenance and built staff training into the contract. We are planning for the long haul,” he said.
In the education sector, the story was no less grim. “When I took office, Zamfara students didn’t sit for WAEC or NECO in 2023. Their certificates dating back to 2011 were being withheld due to debts owed by the state government,” he decried.
To change the narrative, the Governor swiftly negotiated with the examination bodies, settling years of unpaid debts running into about N25.6 billion, thereby restoring access to national exams and credentials for thousands of students.
This, he said, paved the way for his broader agenda which is reviving school infrastructure and boosting enrollment through distribution of free school uniforms,
