Peter Obi: FG’s N142bn bus terminals misplaced priority

From Sola Ojo, Abuja

Former Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has condemned the federal government’s approval of ₦142 billion for the construction of bus terminals across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, describing it as a glaring case of misplaced priority.

Obi, on his verified ‘X’ handle on Friday, argued that the allocation exposes the lack of competence, focus and leadership in governance.

He was worried that the entire 2024 budget for all federal teaching hospitals and psychiatric centres was less than ₦100 billion, yet the government has chosen to spend more on bus terminals.

“This is disturbing, considering that health is one of the most critical areas of development, which is deteriorating and remains grossly underfunded.

“WHO recently reported that over 20 million Nigerians are living with mental health issues,” Obi said.

He added that diverting such huge sums to bus terminals while the nation’s healthcare system was collapsing is not only insensitive but also a tragic irony.

“The difference between the success and failure of the development in any nation is how you prioritise your scarce resources.

“This is not only a misplaced priority but a tragic irony of our country. This is not governance,” he added.
