Peter Obi Urges FG for Road Infrastructure Repairs Over New Projects

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has called on the Federal Government to focus on repairing and improving existing road infrastructure rather than embarking on new road construction projects.

In a post on X.com on Saturday, Obi referenced the recent tanker explosion on the Ilorin-Jebba expressway in Kwara State, which resulted in multiple fatalities. A preliminary investigation revealed that the tanker, carrying 33,000 litres of petrol, collided with a fertilizer-laden truck, causing a fuel spill and subsequent fire.

Obi stressed that a significant percentage of road accidents in Nigeria are due to the deteriorating state of road infrastructure.

“The tragic collision on February 28, 2025, along the Ilorin-Jebba expressway in Kwara State, which claimed over 60 lives, is a heartbreaking reminder of the urgent need to prioritise the reconstruction of existing road infrastructure across the country, improve road safety, and regulate the transportation of hazardous materials, rather than embarking on new road infrastructure that might never be completed,” Obi wrote.

He pointed out the alarming frequency of road accidents and called for urgent and decisive measures to prevent further tragedies. He also referenced a recent visit to Suleja, where over 100 people were burnt due to poor road conditions, and recounted his experience navigating dangerous roads in Kafanchan, which took over three and a half hours.

Obi extended condolences to the victims’ families and urged both the government and citizens to work together in ensuring safer roads.

“As we mourn this loss, I extend my condolences to the families and the good people of Kwara State. May God Almighty grant eternal rest to the departed and provide strength and comfort to their grieving loved ones,” he stated.

He emphasized that with collective responsibility and commitment, the nation could prevent further tragedies and create a safer transportation network for all.
