The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has presented cheques valued at N37,280,296.36 to the families of 33 deceased officers who lost their lives in the course of discharging official duties.
The cheques were issued under the IGP Family Welfare and Group Life Assurance Schemes and presented by the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, on behalf of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, at the Command’s headquarters, Ikot Akpan Abia, Uyo.
Presenting the cheques to the beneficiaries, Azare expressed gratitude to the IGP for the initiative, noting that the money would provide significant support to the bereaved families.
Azare acknowledged the IGP’s concern for the welfare of police personnel and assured that the command would continue its welfare schemes for officers.
“The police are relentless in their welfare scheme for their personnel and will not back down on the initiative, especially for all deceased officers who sacrificed their lives fighting for the peace and progress of the country,” he said.
The CP urged the beneficiaries to utilise the funds wisely, emphasising that the sacrifices of the deceased officers would never be forgotten.
In a related development, the Akwa Ibom State Police Commissioner has pledged to host the Association of Retired Police Officers of Nigeria (NARPON) in the state.
The commissioner expressed gratitude to NARPON for their collaborative approach in addressing issues affecting retired police officers in the state.
He praised the retirees for choosing dialogue over protests, adding that such an approach would lead to more lasting solutions.
Azare promised that the Akwa Ibom Police Command would support NARPON’s requests, including facilitating the acquisition of land for a permanent meeting hall.
Earlier, the State Chairman of NARPON, Chief Anselem Eyo, expressed delight at the command’s efforts in combating crimes in the state.
“Feel free to use us as your operational ambassadors, particularly in sharing some of our residual experiences in various departments of security services,” Eyo said.
