Police warn officers against searching people’s phones

By Christopher Oji

Lagos State Commissioner of Police (CP) Olohundare Moshood Jimoh has issued a stern warning to officers and men under his command against extortion, harassment, human rights violations, and the unprofessional act of name-calling, searching of people’s phones, particularly targeting young people.

The directive came during a strategic security meeting with Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs), Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers (DPOs), and Tactical Commanders in Lagos, in line with the mandate of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun.

In a statement by Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) SP Abimbola Adebisi, the Commissioner stressed that policing must be carried out with respect for citizens’ rights and dignity, emphasising that crime prevention “must be done with a human face.”

CP Jimoh particularly cautioned against the illegal stop-and-search of youths’ phones, describing the practice as prohibited unless the devices are exhibits in ongoing investigations. He added that in such cases, checks must only be conducted within police stations and strictly in line with the law.

The Police Commissioner also used the meeting to highlight some of the Command’s recent operational breakthroughs.

He revealed that officers had successfully arrested Samsideen Oladiti, popularly known as Shameleon, who has been linked to two violent crimes.

He further disclosed that the Command apprehended Jude Onouha, a suspected notorious vehicle vandal, who posed as a security officer to infiltrate residential estates.

In addition, Jimoh announced the arrest of John Samuel, an ex-convict, suspected armed robber, and hired assassin, who was caught for armed robbery and attempted murder, while trying to dispossess a victim of gold jewellery worth millions of naira.

Commending his men for their efforts, CP Jimoh urged Lagos residents to continue supporting the police with credible information that would help sustain safety and security across the state.

“These successes reflect the commitment of the Lagos State Police Command to rid the state of criminal elements and ensure the safety of residents,” he said.
