Recurring killings of security operatives a wake-up call, says Obi

From Sola Ojo, Abuja

Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has decried the recurring killings of security personnel across Nigeria, describing the trend as a national tragedy and a wake-up call to leaders to take urgent action.

Obi on his verified ‘X’ handle on Tuesday lamented the loss of soldiers, policemen, officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and community vigilante members in recent weeks, noting that they paid the ultimate price in the line of duty to safeguard the country.

“These recurring killings should serve as a wake-up call to us leaders to better equip and motivate our security operatives.

“Security must now become the foundation of governance,” Obi said.

He stressed that the sacrifice of fallen heroes should push leaders to build a Nigeria where no life is treated as valueless, not those of security operatives and not those of their families.

Obi also criticised the abandonment of families of slain officers, insisting that government has a duty to provide adequate compensation and long-term support.

“Nigeria cannot continue to bury our men in uniform and leave their families abandoned.

“Our government must rise to the responsibility of ensuring that the wives, children, and parents of these fallen heroes are fairly compensated and supported.

“That is the least a grateful nation can provide, it is not charity, it is justice,” he noted.

Offering prayers for the victims and their loved ones, Obi assured the bereaved families that the sacrifices of their relatives would never be forgotten.

“To every fallen hero, may your soul rest in perfect peace.

“Your sacrifice and patriotism will never be forgotten.

“And to the families left behind, you are not alone,” he consoled.
